Nashville has hosted an enormous Purple Martin roost for many years. For at
least the past 10 years there’s been a huge roost in the trees between Howerton
and Oldham Streets along the bank of the Interstate in downtown Nashville. Much
of that area was lost due to road construction and we want to see what the
response of the birds is and identify some of the smaller roost areas around
the downtown.
If you’re interested in helping let me know. Several of us will be meeting at
7pm on the Shelby Street Walking Bridge to watch the birds that are roosting in
trees on 2nd Avenue downtown, and to watch birds that are staging along the
river to see where they might be going. Wednesday night we’ll look at the roost
site area between Howerton and Oldham Streets, the Circuit Courthouse Public
Square, and any other sites we suspect might be used.
Sunset tomorrow will be at 7:45 pm. Large numbers of martins will begin
swirling over downtown Nashville starting about 7:30pm, they will dive into
roost areas starting at sunset, and the show will be over in about 20 minutes.
