11 March 2004 Greene County, TN I found my first Purple Martins of the year this morning in a brief trip to the Allen's Bridge/Lovette Bridge area of southern Greene County. The recent arrivals (1 male, 2 females) were present at a set of well maintained martin houses on Fillers Mill Road at its intersection with Cartwheel Road. The site is about a mile southwest of the intersection of Highway 70 and Fillers Mill Road. (This point along Highway 70 is about a half mile south of the Nolichuckey River.) This has been a reliable site for the species for several years and is one of the first places I check each spring. Apparently, the property owners take an interest in martins and keep their nest boxes clean. Also present nearby were American Black Duck (2) and Northern Shoveler (5). These birds were on a farm pond on Cartwheel Road within sight of the property with the martin houses. This pond has been surprisingly productive of birds over the last decade or so and is always worth a look when I'm in the area. I also heard a singing Pine Warbler a short distance away at the Oscar B. Lovette Bridge just below the old dam on Crockett Lake. This is not a spring first, as I had noted the species on March 1 at Kinser Park in Greene County. I have sporadic winter records for Pine Warbler in Greene County and suspect that it overwinters. Does anyone else in the area have enough data on Pine Warbler in winter to speculate on this?
