Around 2:30 PM EDT today (4/10) Clyde Blum and I flushed a PURPLE GALLINULE while wading in Standifer Gap Marsh. The bird was just north of the patch trees in the largest open section of the marsh, just south of the dirt road turnaround. It was probably fifty yards from the road and am sure it could not have been spotted without being flushed. It flew south towards the trees back in the cattails and was not seen again. Also present were Dan Jacobson, Judy Newsome, Jim Eager and Gary Brunvoll who all got good looks at the bird. This is the first for this location and probably only the fourth for Hamilton county. Also at the marsh were 6 Sora, 1 Virginia Rail,a Marsh Wren and the first Grasshopper Sparrow of the season. At the Cravens House migration is starting to pick up with eight warbler species: 1 Orange-crowned, 2 Yellow-rumped, 1 Black-throated Green, 1 Cerulean, 3 Black and White, 3 Worm-eating, 6 Hooded and 1 Ovenbird. The first Indigo Bunting of the season was also present. We also found 5 Northern Parula a the Chattanooga Nature Center and 2 Prothonotary Warbler and 2 Common Yellowthroat along Terminal road on Moccasin Bend. We ended up with 93 species for the day.
