I arrived at Duck River at 0540 this morning, and not knowing the road conditions, decided to walk in via the end of Pump Station road. It took me an hour and a half to reach the gallinule site from this direction, I am estimating it is a 5 mile hike The roads were all clear of water but another foot of lake elevation will change that Within 10 minutes or so after arrival, the Purple Gallinule clambered up the driftwood to the right of the sign allowing point blank views A walk in from this direction tomorrow morning may be feasible?? Might be worth a try. On the walk out, 14 Willets were seen loafing on the road at riverside not far from the pumphouse At the pits in Memphis, the WF Ibis was partly hidden in some weeds when I first saw it, and could easily have been overlooked He shortly flew out, and circled around, and then began feeding in the open with a few shorebirds and BW Teals This was all in the first pond below the 3 large ponds, which are mostly flooded and have little shorebird habitat or shorebirds! I made a quick try for Painted Bunting at the usual spot, the wind was really blowing by mid-day and I had no response to tape This area is not marked to be off limits, and I had no hassle from any TVA gestapo A swing through President's Island produced zero flycatchers or WW Doves Not much grain on the ground, guess it all washed away Kudos to Reuben Stoll and John Walko for the very helpful updates 2 more grudge birds bite the dust!
