Here in Henry County, we have also just had our first of season Purple
Finch on January 26. What a difference from last year, when we had so
many!

We've had Fox Sparrows (on a few occasions two at once, but usually
just one) coming sporadically to the ground below our feeders since
the single digit weather on January 6. It's nice to have this species
coming this often... in the past they tended to only come when there
was snow on the ground. The one bird we have been seeing more does
seem to come when it is colder. It's out there today.

We've also had several visits from a Winter Wren this winter (it even
flew in the house once!). The only time we had ever seen one near our
home previously was many years ago in thick woods, and we haven't seen
them anywhere else in the county. We really do enjoy seeing the one
that has been coming, as he hops along the porch and investigates
crevices in a bold way.

It's a good feeder day. Between 7:00 and 9:30 this morning, my husband
saw 17 species just from our small kitchen window.
