[TN-Bird] Preliminary Knoxville CBC report

The Knoxville CBC was held on Saturday, 2 January 2010 in bitter
cold conditions. Temperatures dropped below freezing Friday
afternoon and are still there. Fortunately many of the ponds
did not have time to freeze by Saturday so we did get some ducks.
Those of us on the Blount Co side of Ft Loudon Lake had the worst
of the winds coming off of the lake from the north and many of the
birds seemed to be staying around the sheltered south-facing shoreline
on the Knox County side.

With only about 1/3 of the reports in so far, we stand at 82 species.
We will hopefully add some more species but will have a hard time
reaching 100 as we have the past 2 years.

No exceptionally rare birds so far but several good finds including:

2 Redhead by Dean Edwards on Ft Loudon Lake
2 C Goldeneye by Kelly Roy
3 Great Egret, 2 by Dean Edwards and Tom Howe at Lackey Creek in Blount
Co and 1 by Steve and Gail Clendenen in Knox Co

4 Bald Eagles, a new high count, 2 adults by Ed LeGrand on Melton
Hill Lake and 1 adult and 1 3rd year bird by Susan Hoyle and Martha
Rudolph on Ft Loudon Lake

Sandhill Cranes, by Tom Howe at Lackey Creek in Blount Co
Am Woodcock, by Ed LeGrand at Haw Ridge in Anderson Co
Herring Gull, but count week only so far

All 3 expected owls (Barred, GH, Screech)

Good numbers of Brown-headed Nuthatches and Fox Sparrows

Good showings of Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed Cowbirds
compared to recent years. All blackbirds have gotten to be rare
on this count as farmland has been converted to residential and
commercial properties. Whereas in the 1970s and 80s we would get
10,000s, now we do good to find them at all. Still no grackles
reported yet.

Thanks to all that participated.

compiler, Knoxville CBC
