12/8/08 South Davidson County

I checked off a new yard bird today with sighting of 4 Pine Siskins on the
thistle feeder. Now I don't feel left out, since they seem to be everywhere
this year.

12/7/08 Percy Priest Lake, Long Hunter State Park, Davidson Co.
At Couchville Lake the Hooded Mergansers are back with 68 counted. John
Froeschauer, former ranger/ naturalist at Long Hunter SP, says an old
timer-duck
hunter told him the Hoodies pre-date the lake, that they were coming there
before Percy Priest Lake was formed in the 60's. The limestone-based area is
riddled with sink holes, with underground connections to the Stones River.
When
the Stones river rose in high water the"lake", now called Couchville Lake,
would form. At the north end of the lake the Black Vulture roost held about
200. And there were about 20 Ring-billed Gulls on the lake.

Of interest on Percy Priest Lake, in the little bay at Volunteer Day Loop
trail: 6 Horned Grebes, 1 Pied -billed Grebe , just a few Com. Loons, and 1
Winter Wren along the shore-line rocks.
