Many of you are now regularly using the media upload tools in eBird
to attach photos to your eBird checklists. Something I want to
mention is that this tool is not just for rarities. If you have good
photos of common species, feel free to upload them too from time to
time. Every uploaded photo becomes a geo- and spatially referenced
digital specimen at the Macaulay library of the CLO. And it is
readily available to anyone with internet access. If you are
interested in geographical variation, for instance, you can pull up
the eBird species map, click "show rich media" and then see a map of
all available photos. Click for the checklist, and there the image
is. Also true if you are just interested in, say, the range of
variation in bill and head shapes among Ross's Geese, quite a hot
topic in TN this winter.
So do not be shy about uploading good clear photos of common birds
with your eBird checklists! Also note that after you upload a photo
you are asked to rate the quality of your own image from 1 to 5 stars
(poor to excellent). So that barely discernable digiscoped rarity 3
km away gets 1 star, and the sharp, bright, detailed portrait gets 5.
Many users are neglecting to do this, but it is an important piece of
metadata so please to take the 2 seconds to rate.
