Harriet and I hiked the Alum Cave trail to the summit of Mt. LeConte (Tenn. side of the Smokies) on Sat. Sept. 27 and returned on Sun Sept. 28. I apologize for this late posting. Best sightings of the trip were a PEREGRINE FALCON which flew right in front of us at an overlook on the summit ("The Clifftops") and a group of 5 RED CROSSBILLS which were flying from spruce tree to spruce tree both days near the summit. The crossbills included 3 immatures, a female and a male--quite a variety of plumages--and great looks at all of them. Crossbills were also heard on the trail up. Several Tennessee Warblers were part of a foraging flock with many juncos at about 4500 feet, encountered at the same location both going up and down. Two Bay-breasted Warblers were actively foraging in a medium-sized Fraser Fir near the summit (6000+ ft.). Below is a list of birds encountered on the hikes and the approximate elevation (or range) for each in feet: Peregrine Falcon (1) -- 6300 ft. Hairy WP (2) -- 3000/5500 Blue Jay (1) -- 3500 Black-capped Chickadee (1) -- 4000 Red-breasted Nuthatches (about 10) -- 4000-5500 Winter Wrens --3500-6000 Golden-crowned Kinglets -- 4000-6000 Bay-breasted Warblers (2) -- 6000 Tennessee Warblers (8?) -- 4500 Black-throated Blue Warbler (1 fem.) -- 4500 Juncos (many) -- 4000--6300 R-S Towhee -- 3500--6000 Red Crossbills (6) -- 4500-6200 Dev Joslin Oak Ridge, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Topographical Maps located at http://topozone.com/find.asp * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Tennessee Ornithological Society web site at http://www.tnbirds.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net Owner: Wallace Coffey, Bristol, TN jwcoffey@xxxxxxxxxx (423) 764-3958 =========================================================
