Arkabutla Lake, MS

The numbers of Ring-billed Gulls in the south at this time is unbelievable
and also rewarding.
Scanning the hordes of gulls on the north Mississippi Lakes this past week
has been enthralling but yesterday when a huge number of Bonaparte's and
Ring-bills leaped from the water into the air and started swirling, the mass
parted and entered the culprit. A Peregrine cut like a knife through the
snow storm and snatched an adult Bonaparte's Gull from the flurry. It flew
straight toward me and landed on a stump at the base of the dam and I watched
as it started to feed. This large, dark immature Peregrine had learned
her lessons well and the Bonaparte's Gull numbers had been reduced by one. I
got a few distant photos of the Peregrine clutching her prize.
Another reward for just sitting and watching Nature doing Her
thing..........

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens?
