Percy Priest Lake, Davidson Co.
Saturday, Mar 5, 2016
Phillip Casteel and I headed over to Percy Priest this morning in search of
loons and other waterbirds. We started at the dam where we had 50+ Common
Loons along with a flock of 8 Red-breasted Mergansers (all males).
Following up on Richard Connors' post about Red-throated Loons from yesterday,
we then worked our way over to Hamilton Creek where it was more about quality
vs. quantity. We only found 4 Common Loons, but also had 2 winter-plumaged
Red-throated Loons actively feeding together in the middle of the lake. We
spotted a very distant loon that looked good for Pacific, but it was actually
closer to Anderson Creek Rec. area, so we high-tailed it over there.
When we reached the point at Anderson, we found not 1 but 2 Pacific Loons for a
3-loon day! The Pacific Loons were also in winter plumage complete with
chinstraps. One of the loons was especially cooperative and was mingling with
some Common Loons allowing for great comparisons. While viewing the Pacific, a
Red-throated Loon literally flew across my scope view, and then I watched it
settle down right off the point - I'm not sure if this was one of the two birds
we had at Hamilton, but it flew in from the opposite direction, so possibly a
third bird!
Viewing conditions were really good, with calm water and almost no heat shimmer
which it made it that much more enjoyable.
