Carole Gobert called Sunday morning to tell me that she had found
a Horned Grebe at the pond on Pellissippi State Campus in west
Knox County.

I dipped on the Whopping Crane, having not yet gotten Marcia's
note on the bird's leaving. As expected, there were way too
many people in the park and a couple actually on the island.
I checked a few other nearby spots but the only big white bird
I could find was the Great Egret that hangs around Miser Station
Rd. Did find 6 Great Blue Herons on 3 finished nests and a 4th
just under construction off of Little Dug Gap Rd in Blount Co
a few trees over from where there were nests last year. No sign
of the Sandhill Cranes that overwintered here.

On to Pellissippi State where Carole's Horned Grebe was an
easy find. It's still in basic plumage. Took a few photos
but if someone has a good digiscoping rig, they could get
some awesome shots of this bird.

Also at Pellissippi State, I had my personal first Purple
Martin of the season, a young male. Also 1 or 2 Tree Swallows.

Before leaving the house, I had a Tree Swallow buzz the
neighborhood making the earliest date for that species on
the yard list.
