Cross Creeks NWR
Dover, TN
Sunday, October 27, 2019
Steve and I ventured to Cross Creeks NWR today after receiving a report early
this morning about two AMERCIAN AVOCETS in Pool 1. We found them there
vigorously feeding along-side 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. A
huge flock of about 300 AMERICAN PELICANS began to arrive along with a few
RING-BILLED GULLS and before we ventured on through the refuge we heard the
distinct call of a GREAT HORNED OWL coming off the ridge behind us. At the
levy entrance off Hwy 49 in Indian Mound we finally spotted the NEOTROPIC
CORMORANT reported by Sharon Arnold a few weeks ago. It was in its usual place
on the snag sunning itself. YELLOW-RUMP WARBLERS were in abundance today at
every stop and we had our FOS HERMIT THRUSH along with a BROWN CREEPER,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW AND YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS. Other notable species
were an OSPREY at the Dover bridge, a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, A SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK and HOODED MERGANSERS. All and all we had 47 species today.
Happy birding!
