1/28/04 Paris Landing to Pace Point; including Port Rd and Britton Ford areas This is just a quick note to let anyone know who is interested in what was turned up midweek in the above areas. Don Manning and myself met Jeff Wilson along with Bud Johnson and Tommy and Virginia Curtis for a great day of birding. Loon numbers were down (in their usual areas anyway) but we did get some quick looks at a Pacific, and leisurely views at 2 different Red-throated's, an adult and immature. I was able to spend more time with Red-throated's yesterday than I ever have in a day. These loon sightings were all from Rocky Point. Gull numbers are the most any of us have ever seen in the area, although we didn't turn up any of the hoped-for rarities. Jeff did have a likely Lesser Black-backed in bad light 1st thing that morning on the island out from Paris Landing. There are literally untold thousands of gulls in this general area, with a minimum of 5000 sitting just on Pace Point yesterday afternoon, and groups this size visible in other areas as well. Duck numbers were down, although we did have 20+ species of waterfowl on the day, no surprises though. Best finds were all 4 regular species of geese at Britton Ford, and Common Mergansers in the distance from Rocky Point. Red-breasted Merg's were present in the 100's, and practically always in view while looking at the water. We lucked up on a mid-day adult Golden Eagle that gave us some brief looks as it sat in the roost area pine trees. A yard on the way out to Eagle Creek campground had a very impressive clientele of Purple Finches, it was hard to estimate, but at least 50 in the area, probably more. Jeff had Siskins here over last weekend, but no luck with this species today. Maybe Jeff will be able to post some more highlights (and liven the post up a little as well :') from the day, but this will keep you up to date with sightings in the area. Good birding!!
