Island 40 Chute

I've tried for a couple of weeks to get in touch with the Samples; they
have the wonderful place at Island 40 across from Memphis, and always
welcomed birders to their wondrous garden. Yesterday their truck was parked at
the
top of the levee and they were just coming back in a boat from visiting
their place.

After 52 years, the Mississippi took its toll, and the river got to the
eves of their house. Luckily with the help of friends, they were able to get
their furnishings out before the crest but of course everything is ruined.
They looked pretty beat, but even then, Dorothy had taken two hummingbird
feeders over and hung them on the porch, just as you would expect from these
two great souls, thinking of others in the middle of their own plight.

Of course, they could not get flood insurance where they were and will now
be involved with the torturous task of going through the government red
tape.

They are not going to move back but will try to sell what is left of their
40 acre Shangri-La and build a new life elsewhere. Many birders over the
years have visited with this couple, sat among their glorious flowers while
watching hundreds of Hummers and dozens of nesting Prothonotary Warblers.
Each year they would make up 250lbs + of sugar for hummers and mix hundreds
of pounds of suet and peanut butter for the birds.

Keep them in your prayers for no others deserve it more. Maybe we can all
get together and honor them for what they have meant to us over the years.
Good Birding!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
