Poole Knobs field trial areaJune 7Rutherford CountyJackie Corbin and I arrived
at the 4-way intersection at 6:35 am, and another birder had been there an hour
without seeing or hearing the Painted Bunting. Jackie and I walked a little
ways down each road, and meanwhile the other birder left. At 7:20 I drove down
to tell Jackie I was headed out, and on the way past the intersection spotted
the Painted Bunting in a small dead shrub across from where we parked. I went
back and picked up Jackie and we returned. The Painted Bunting sang from the
small clump of bushes on the one corner, the power lines, and from treetops on
the other sides of two roads. Jan Shaw showed up around 7:45 and was
immediately able to see it. I headed out at 7:50 to head to work.Ken
