The same could be said for many posts to places in KY or in any other state.
Directions for all the above mentioned points have been given over the years
on TN-Bird directed mainly to TN birders. Many of the names are some that we
have developed over this time for a convenient way to convey exact locations.
I would like to see the tome that listed direction and held maps to all the
good birding locations mentioned on any birding forum and what would be of
interest to one would not be to another.
I monitor many state lists and it is quite easy just to ask for specific
information from the individual poster and I've always had success. Putting
together a map for that area might help but then you would need a map for
hundreds of locations even in that area there are 20 plus points that need to
be
mentioned to even scratch the surface of the bounty found there and that might
not cover exactly what one wanted to know. A good project for someone with
unlimited time and resources but it would cut into your time in the field or
with family or friends. If you took away that time in the field, then many new
or unexplored great birding areas would not come to the fore.
I'm working on a guide to some of my favorite places in West Tennessee,
somewhat like the Memphis area guide I did for ABA. It takes time and the
project
grows like topsy. I get requests daily about birds and birding in TN from TN
birders and others all over the US or for that matter world travelers and I
have directions ready that I can send to those that request them on most of
the locations but far from all.
It takes time to put together a post, like Mike's, about your time in the
field; adding directions to every post would just make for more work and like
I
said many exact places are named because there are no names on the map,
therefore a Gazetteer (which usually abounds in mistakes) is not much help in
giving directions. I probably use over a dozen names that have become general
knowledge to many over the years that do not appear on any map.
Sure would help to have a complete map for all the good places mentioned
each day on every list in every state. Like I said, it would be a good project
for someone that had the time or would take the time away from their birding.
By the time the project is complete in KY then we might get one done in TN;o)
