The Bristol Bird Club is delighted and excited to announce that Jesse B.
Pope Jr., one of the Carolina Bird Club's most renowned and active birders
and the Executive Director of the famous Grandfather Mountain tourist
attraction at Newland, NC, will be our club's after-dinner speaker for the
BBC Annual Banquet scheduled for Friday, 2 October, at 6:30 p.m. at

Pope1Pope, a 13-year employee of Grandfather Mountain, has served the
attraction as assistant vice president and director of education and natural
resources. During his time at Grandfather Mountain, Pope also worked as a
seasonal trail ranger and on the animal habitats staff before launching the
park's naturalist program, which he led for six years. More than a quarter
of a million visitors go to Grandfather Mountain each year.

This weekend he is chairing the Carolina Bird Club's annual Fall Meeting
which is being held Sept. 18-19 at Hickory, NC and expects about 140
birders.



Pope is on the Board of Directors of the Carolina club and the High Country
Audubon Society where he has served three years as President. He served
nearly six years as President of the North Carolina Association of
Environmental Education Centers and currently is President of the North
Carolina Association of Environmental Education Centers that represent more
than 200 environmental centers across North Carolina.

He has been presented the Bird-Lore Conservation Education Award from the
North Carolina Audubon Society; Forty for the Future Inagural Award from the
Southeast Tourism Society, Appreciation Award by the North Carolina Wildlife
Resources Commission, National Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental
Educaiton Trainer's Bureau Facilitators Training and North American
Association of Environmental Education and recognized by the North Carolina
Wildlife Resources Commission

A native of Mouth of Wilson, Va., Pope holds a bachelor's degree in biology
with a naturalist concentration from Lees-McRae College and a master's
degree in environmental education from Montreat College.



As executive director of the Grandfather Mountain nonprofit, Pope is
responsible for the overall management of the park's staff and programs and
execution of the organization's strategic plan which includes the
Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization.
