5-19-2011 Shelby Park Davidson Co. After Frank Fekel and I enjoyed great looks at the Swainson's Warbler in Shelby Bottoms (thank you Phillip!), I decided to try the trail at Mission Hill in Shelby Park for Olive-sided Flycatcher. Just after almost deciding to turn back, I heard the "three beers" call twice and then found it in a tree with some dead branches at the top. The white tufts on the sides of the rump were well exposed. I got to watch it fly out and catch a 13-year cicada and then bang the wings off of it on a branch. The tree was a ways down the trail just after it takes the first sharp curve to the right (south). Look to the east from there, towards Shelby Lake, and the tree is easily seen. Afterwards I drove through the park and saw a Common Nighthawk flying between the ball fields and the river. Quite a morning!
