From photos that Ed Schneider took on Wednesday of the banded Piping Plover (combination of being able to read nearly all the numbers on the metal USGS band and the one color band it was sporting), we found out that the bird was almost certainly banded in Saskatchewan, probably as a chick, in 2001 (yes, 2001). We haven't gotten the exact banding date yet, but we should be able to get this info soon. The location and year are correct though. I'll post the final info when I get it. Researchers said this bird was not seen during winter surveys on the Gulf Coast and is thought to likely have wintered in Mexico. Although Ed Schneider has photos that are much better than mine, I've included a few at the link before for anyone interested: http://www.pbase.com/shoeman/piping_plover_20_apr_11 If anyone looked for and relocated the birds on Thursday or later, please let me know. Thanks! FYI- This is at minimum the 6th spring record for Tennessee (maybe 1-2 more are in records I haven't found yet).
