11-14-2014 Janet and Bertrand Taylor and I had a cold but very enjoyable day exploring both the north and south sides of Old Hickory Lake today. Highlights included many Common Loons and Horned Grebes, Redheads, Buffleheads, gorgeous Hooded Mergansers, three female Red-breasted Mergansers, 20 Great Blue Herons below the dam, many Bonaparte's Gulls, a lovely male Sapsucker, and two Hermit Thrushes (heard only). Yellow-rumped Warblers were still quite numerous along the nature trail by the dam, but sparrows were surprisingly absent. Several Wood Ducks were still present along Drakes Creek.
