May 28, 2005

I have lately been suffering from DHS (Dead Hard drive Syndrome) and
have been unable to send e-mail conveniently. (No important bird data
was lost when the old drive died, and I'm back online and better than
before with a new computer.)

Here's a quick rundown of observations from May 15-27; quite a few
noteworthy species crossed my path--

Hooded Merganser (female, Watauga River, Elizabethton, Carter Co., May 23);
Sharp-shinned Hawk (Greeneville, May 15);
Red-shouldered Hawk (immature, Greene Co., May 21);
Northern Bobwhite (Greene Co. (2 sites), May 18-20, 22);
Spotted Sandpiper (Greene Co., May 15);
Great Horned Owl (Greene Co. (1 site), May 18, 23);
Least Flycatcher (8 (4 Hampton Creek Cove State Historic Area, 4 Roan
Mountain), Carter Co., May 23);
Willow Flycatcher (4, Hampton Creek Cove State Historic Area, Carter
Co., May 23);
Alder Flycatcher (2, Carver's Gap, Roan Mountain, Carter Co., May 23);
Horned Lark (probable nesting species) (2, Baughard Hill Road, Greene
Co., May 21);
Cliff Swallow (75+, Easterly Bridge, Poplar Springs Road, Greene Co.,
May 21);
Yellow-throated Vireo (hard-to-find summer resident) (Greene Co. (2
sites), May15, 22);
Red-breasted Nuthatch (Camp Creek Bald, Greene Co., May 22);
Swainson's Thrush (1-2, Greeneville, May 17-18);
Golden-winged Warbler (at least 2, Hampton Creek Cove State Historic
Area, Carter Co., May 23);
Magnolia Warbler (Greeneville, May 21) (latest spring date I've ever
recorded for this transient);
Blackpoll Warbler (Greene Co. (several sites), May 15, 17-18, 20);
Swainson's Warbler (Viking Mountain Road, Greene Co., May 22);
Northern Waterthrush (Greene Co., May 22) (latest date I've ever
recorded for this transient);
Canada Warbler (10, Viking Mountain Road, Greene Co., May 22) (a high
total for this summer resident);
Summer Tanager (Greene Co. (2 sites), May 19, 21);
Dickcissel (2-4, River Plantation, Greene Co., May 20-21, 23, 25);
Pine Siskin (5, Carver's Gap, Roan Mountain, Carter Co., May 23).
