Fellow birders. Rick Knight and I are leading 2 trips the weekend of Saturday
April 7, and Sunday April 8, 2018 in East Tennessee in hopes of at least
hearing N. Saw-whet Owls. Seeing them is probably not going to happen. This
trip is just birders going birding. There are no fees, no T-shirts, etc. You
are responsible for reliable transportation and anything else you may need.
This trip is totally dependent on the weather. Early spring in the Mountains is
always unpredictable. We will try to make the call to cancel Thursday, Friday
around Noon at the latest. Post will be made here and on Tennessee Birding, and
East Tennessee Birding Facebook pages. If the trip is cancelled we will try
again next year.
The first trip will be up Unaka Mountain.
We will meet up at the USDA Forest Service Office at 4400 Unicoi Dr., Unicoi,
TN between 3:30PM and 4:00PM eastern time on Saturday April 7. We will be
leaving and birding our way up the mountain looking for Raven, Juncos,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, etc. After dark we will start listening for the owls and
work our way back down the mountain. The road up Unaka Mountain is gravel, but
cars should have no trouble. Remember this is early Spring in the Mountains
please be prepared for cool to cold weather. Pack your supper, flashlights,
water, coats, etc.
The second trip will be up Roan Mt.
We will meet at the Roan Mt. Gristmill Visitor Center, 527 TN-143, Roan
Mountain. Sunday, April 8. We will leave PROMPTLY at 5:30 AM Eastern Time in
order to reach Carvers Gap and listened for Owls before sunrise. There will be
some walking on this part of the trip. We will bird our way down Roan Mt after
There are hotels in Johnson City and Elizabethton, TN. Accommodations,
transportation, food, flashlights, warm clothing all up to you. We are just
inviting you to go birding with us. Birders going birding.
You do not have to do both trips. We are just increasing our odds of hearing
