This late birding report is brought to you by South Holston Lake. An all inclusive birding location, SHL has it all. Now the late birding report. While en route to Shady Valley Saturday afternoon , Nora Schubert and I birded a couple of birding hotspots around South Holston Lake in Sullivan County, TN and Washington County, VA. We first stopped at the Weir Dam (just below the lake). This portion of the South Holston River had the "normal" compliment birds that I have seen there off and on all winter. These birds included Redhead Ducks (~3), Green-winged Teal (~3), Bufflehead (~30), American Wigeon (~10), and a few Mallards. (Sullivan County, TN) From there we next stopped at Musick's Campground (on the border of Sullivan County, TN and Washington County, VA). Here we had a raft of American Wigeon (~12) with a single male Northern Pintail mixed in the bunch (sitting on the lake in Washington County, VA). Two Lesser Scaup joined the raft while we watched and ~100 Ring-billed Gulls rounded out the light amount of birds on the water. *note* I made a mistake and wrote down Greater Scaup instead of Lesser Scaup in the sign in / bird sighting book. I will try and correct this the next time I am out that way (or if someone else thinks of it while they are sign in / out/ listing, and wanted to fix if for me...I would be most grateful).
