Lick Creek Rd, Big Sandy area, Benton County
On Saturday night, our family participated in our fifth nightjar survey
for the Nightjar Survey Network. Conditions were good for listening
for nightjars with a bright moon, no wind, and a clear sky. We had
good results with 23 Chuck-will's-widows and 17 Whip-poor-wills on our
10 mile
survey route. This was down from last year's total of 44 birds (which
was split evenly between Chucks and Whips), but up from 35 in 2016, 30
in 2015, and 19 in 2014.
Our route is in Big Sandy (Benton County), starting about a mile from
the Big Sandy portion of the TN National Wildlife Refuge and heading
back along Lick Creek Road toward the small town of Big Sandy. At
each of the 10 stops, we listen and count the number of birds we hear
calling for each minute of the six minute count window. Each of our 10
stops yielded multiple birds.
Next year we will try to avoid doing this survey on Memorial Day
weekend, for as the night got later, traffic increased due to either
the holiday or the Big Sandy Spring Festival which was closing up just
as we were nearing town.
There is still time to participate. Check out
http://www.nightjars.org/ to find available routes and instructions.
