I just had a similar experience at Mt. Olive Cemetery in South Knoxville. A flock of about 10 common nighthawks were circling low over a hilltop. They seemed more like they were playing with each other than feeding. It was a real treat to see them so low and in full sun. Even without binoculars I could see their faces, gray mottling on their breasts, a band on the tail and those lovely wings and wingbeats. They never called, but there were lots of interactive swoops and dives.
