Great game to play, Being out in the field with a Prepared Mind will bring
results. Here are a few comments from an Ol' Coots view.......

Chris Sloan's Predictions of Next 10 New Species for Tennessee:
1. Mountain Bluebird - Probably will not be found associating with Eastern
Bluebirds.

2. Tufted Duck - Mike Todd and I both spent tons of time scanning flocks of
 scaup.

3. Great-tailed Grackle - A pair seen by Larry Peavler and I was
photographed a few years back on the Great River Road at the Dyer-Lake Co line
and a
single male was seen a couple of years later on Island 13. They are here along
the river looking for a home but I would not be surprised to find one at a
McDonald's parking lot.

4. Greater Roadrunner -Years ago one was reported to Ben and Lula Coffey
here in Memphis and I was asked to go check it out as the guy that had seen it
was from AZ. I told her the yard would be close to a Golf Course or a
railway. When I got there the guys house backed up to a railroad track that
separated his yard from a golf course. The bird was never seen again.

5. Burrowing Owl - I have photographed one in Mississippi Co. AR within a
couple of miles of the Mississippi River. I've often said Highway 79 in Lake
Co. looks like good habitat to me. Also, Glen Criswell had a small odd owl fly
across in front of him in that area one time.

7. Mountain Plover - I went down to Sardis Lake in Mississippi for their
Christmas Count the year the bird was found and I found and photographed the
bird a mile out on the mud flat in the lake

8. Fork-tailed Flycatcher - another "anywhere, any time" vagrant from
South America. The AR bird was found in FEBRUARY!! I got some nice photos
the day after it was located.

9. Northern Wheatear - Just need to look at every bird for this one.....

10. Slaty-backed Gull - I found and photographed the first lower 48
immature Slaty-back in Tunica Co. Mississippi in January 1993. The record and
photos
were reviewed and record is listed in Americas 100 Most Wanted Birds and
other publications.

Here are my candidate species that didn't quite crack the top 10. I
won't bore you with the explanations,
.
Wilson's Storm-Petrel -- Just one Hurricane Away
Crested Caracara - No reason why not.
Northern Lapwing - Wrong way migrator
Pacific Golden-Plover - I have some photos of mine and others that probably
are this species.
Spotted Redshank - Pretty far out but there again Why Not.
Little Stint - Already have had 2 a the pits.
Black-tailed Gull - Just being out there watching
Mew Gull - Should be here THIS YEAR........
Glaucous-winged Gull - One has already flown through TN on its way to Alabama
Ancient Murrelet - If we can get a Long-billed on the Reelfoot CBC why not
an OLD ONE
Lesser Nighthawk - Again just paying attention........
Lewis' Woodpecker -
Western Wood-Pewee -
Cassin's Kingbird - With all the Western Kingbirds breeding in the area- so
what's next?
Bicknell's Thrush - Paying attention with a Prepared Mind
Painted Redstart - Now that one would tighten someone's knickers!

Good Birding !!!
