Chattanooga News Item Posted at www.chattanoogan.com Hamilton County, TN ------------------------------------ anybody know anything about this? ------------------------------------ City officials said they plan to deal with the problem of noisy, dirty starlings congregating downtown by spraying them with a chemical derived from Concord grapes. Lee Norris, deputy public works administrator, said, "It has no impact on humans or other animals, but it gives birds the equivalent of a toothache. It makes them not want to go back to that same spot." He said the city plans to spend $7,000 to bring in Flock Fighters of Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. Norris said the firm will spray areas near Warehouse Row and the Tennessee Aquarium. He said city workers will be taught how to use the sprayers. Councilman Jack Benson asked if the pesky birds would not just fly somewhere nearby - such as out to his East Brainerd district. Mr. Norris said city crews will come out if the birds become a problem elsewhere. He said the city got good reviews on the process from animal rights groups as well as other cities who tried it. He said the city previously had tried everything from noisemakers to fake predator birds and fireworks to get rid of the starlings.
