FYI, there is a new version of the Stokes field guide out. I had a chance to
flip through it at a bookstore while on travel last week. It's quite a tome but
I was pleasantly surprised with it.
I've never been a big fan of the Stokes guides (except for the great bird song
CDs) but this one looks to be pretty good. From what I saw, it's probably the
best non-family-specific photo guide I've seen with most species having several
photos showing different plumages. They even had a juvenile Blue Jay... still
waiting for a guide with a bald Cardinal.

It covers all of the US and Canada except Hawai'i which, as usual, gets the
shaft. Unlike most of the other Stokes guides, the birds are arranged in
(mostly) taxonomical order instead of irritating arrangements like "yellow
birds", "birds with long bills", or whatever.

It seems that they tried to anticipate the recent AOU changes but didn't fully
succeed (similar to the first edition of Sibley which had American Magpie). So
Pacific Wren is included as a separate species but not Mexican Whip-poor-will
(although it is shown as a subspecies). Also they went with American Scoter
instead of Black Scoter. I'm sure these things will be fixed in the next
printing.

It also comes with a CD of bird songs... I forget how many species but a lot...
probably MP3s to get that many on a single CD.
