I have a nest box in my back yard nailed to a tree trunk about 12-18 inches in diameter. I pair of Tufted Titmouses (Titmice is it maybe ? :) ) had raised a brood of about 5 young and they were just about fledged. Today I noticed that something raided the nest box and cleaned out all the young. I found one dead young on the ground and another 1/2 of one nearby. Also I was surprised to see a dead female Cardinal on the ground about 5 feet away from the others. Any ideas on what helped themselves to the meal? And why the Cardinal was there other then coincidence? I doubt that it was a snake as I have heard that snake can't really climb a tree that big around to a height of 5 feet off the ground. I have tons of gray squirrels in the yard but thought those were pretty much herbivores.
