I am going to forward your message to an entomologist friend, but I wonder if your "hornet" isn't a cicada killer wasp..a truly wonderful insect that catches and kills large insects and caterpilars for its young. I am shooting from the hip on this..but it seems there are two types of cicada killers, one nests in the ground and the other inside walls, so maybe your nest is attracting the wall nesting type. I am not sure if they would be a threat to your birds or not. I have one that lives in the wall on my front porch and have always rather enjoyed having her around... ...just a thought, are you sure this isn't some kind of dirt-dauber? When you say "pod" is that pod made of mud?
