The Nashville area Fall Count was held on Saturday, October 6 amid record high temperatures and south winds, which helped to keep numbers down. Total species tallied were 119, much lower than last year's 132, but higher than the previous year. Thank you to all the participants who braved the heat to record some real beauties and interesting finds. Here are some highlights and lowlights, followed by the entire list. only 1 northern bobwhite - Harpeth East osprey - 2 in Cheatham Co. no bald eagles peregrine falcon - 1 bathing at Gallatin Steam Plant Baird's sandpiper - 2 at Gallatin Steam Plant Eurasian collared-dove - 2 Percy Priest Lake no red-headed woodpeckers only 1 loggerhead shrike - Percy Priest Lake all expected vireos were seen, but very low numbers red-breasted nuthatch - 1 Shelby Park marsh wren - 2 Gallatin Steam Plant very low thrush numbers 21 warbler species with magnolia being the most numerous with 116 white-throated sparrow - 1 Harpeth East dark-eyed junco - 2 Owls Hill orchard oriole - 1 first year female at Percy Priest Lake; this is a new late fall date, but there is one winter record. mute swan - 1 on Robin Hill Rd. in Cheatham Co.; a mute swan was seen on our '07 spring count in the same area, but was not seen there during the summer.
