Radnor Lake State Natural Area Nashville-Davidson County, TN Wednesday 21 October 2009 About 20 birders met in the West Parking Lot of Radnor Lake State Natural area this morning for the final NTOS Wednesday morning walk for the Fall 2009 season. The weather could not have been better. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO immediately got our attention before we even left the parking lot. The most numerous warbler species was the YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER; these were present throughout most of the walk. However at least three BAY-BREASTED WARLBERS were present and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS were also well-represented. One PALM WARBLER made himself immediately recognizable by his tail pumping on a branch over the lake. We saw all woodpecker species except the Red-Headed Woodpecker, which is uncommon at Radnor. A WINTER WREN was seen along the trail. One very odd wren got our attention at the spillway. It looked at first like a Bewick's Wren, with a pale whitish breast, but was clearly singing like a Carolina Wren. Both SUMMER and SCARLET TANAGERS appeared almost side by side for us, allowing for a good study. Several WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were heard, a signal that cooler weather is really here to stay. The Nashville Chapter of TOS will resume the Wednesday Radnor Walks in April 2010. Thanks to all who participated this fall.
