Harpeth River State Park-- Narrows of the Harpeth Kingston Springs-Cheatham Co. TN May 21, 2011 . Almost twenty birders joined today's Field Trip sponsored by the Nashville Chapter of TOS at the Narrows of the Harpeth section of the Harpeth River State Park. The unusual terrain of this park, with great vistas from the narrow path above the Harpeth River flowing by on the left and again on the right, made for some great views of birds at eye level or even from above. Right at the parking area we saw numerous CLIFF SWALLOWS, flying in and out of their nests under the Harris Street Bridge. NORTHERN PARULAS and PROTHONOTARYS were the most numerous of the warblers, and most of the birders got great looks at both these species; however, the most cooperative warbler was a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER that stayed out in the open in a bare tree for quite some time, looking left, front, right, its bright yellow throat gleaming in the morning sunlight. We also saw several GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS out in plain view and from some interesting angles. A lone RED- HEADED WOODPECKER was spotted from above as it flew down the river and rounded a bend, its white rump and secondaries flashing its identity. Once down from the cliffs the group got looks at a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and a singing PRAIRIE WARBLER. Two EASTERN PHOEBES shared a branch over the river, flicking their tails. Thanks to all who participated and helped to make this a good outing.
