TN-Birders: Some time around 3 a.m. today, 10 March, TN-Birds Net came under attack from spammer addresses attempting to position our list for the delivery of future advertising spam. Thanks to the very swift detection by one of our list administrators, we have intercepted the attacks and gotten ahead of it. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING TO SECURE EITHER YOUR COMPUTER OR TO PREVENT SPAM DELIVERY. JUST CONTINUE AS NORMAL. Administrator Dave Worley called this morning to say we had begun to see the invasion. It first began when a post was placed to TN-Birds by a legitimate subscribe who actually had absolutely nothing to do with the problem. When TN-Birds Net mailed it to the list, the legitimate message was sent to subscribers and two of them were immediately bounced back to your administrators by Freelist as accounts not active or available for mail delivery from TN-Birds. Worley then noted that we had gotten a string of overnight subscribers that had highly suspect e-mail addresses. He called me. Dave and I managed to get to the administrator functions of the list and shut those down so they would not be able to post to the list. This blocked any future spam deliver by those addresses. There have been about a dozen subscriptions all coming from e-mail at yahoo.com addresses. If you are a legitimate subscriber to TN-Birds Net and you are a yahoo.com e-mail user, please do not post anything to TN-Birds Net until such time that I notify the list that yahoo.com subscribers are again free to post to the list. This should be less than 24 hrs. By doing this we will be limiting the inflow of messages and subscriptions from yahoo.com addresses and allow us to stay abreast and/or ahead of any similar yahoo.com subscribers trying to position our list to send us spam. We continue to attempt to deliver you the highest quality of list service available and to make your online birding communications useful, safe and enjoyable. Thanks for you help.
