Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Davidson Co.
Nashville, TN
Thursday, 2010 October 14
7:00-9:20am
mostly clear, cool

After visiting CLOUDY Radnor Lake yesterday and seeing most of the birds
on the NTOS walk, I decided to return to SUNNY Radnor Lake this Thursday
morning. To say the least, viewing conditions were much better today.
However, I got only 39 species by myself today as opposed to 45 species
yesterday with the group of birders. More eyes and ears have their
advantages. The primary reduction in species numbers resulted from
seeing fewer warbler and vireo species. In fact I only had 6
warbler species today. However, one was very worthwhile. As I stood
on the bridge at the dam, I suddenly saw a ground-hugging, rear end
bobbing little brown job. My brain concluded immediately that it
was a waterthrush, and my binoculars refined that thought, NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH, my first one for the year, and thus the best bird of
the morning. I also saw my first of the season WINTER WREN and
RING-NECKED DUCK. ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKs are still coming through
and even in their fall plumage are a pleasure to see. The raft of
BLUE-WINGED TEAL from yesterday was MIA today.

Birds of interest include:
Gadwall 4
Ring-Necked Duck 3
N. Flicker 5
E. Wood-Pewee 1
E. Phoebe 2

Winter Wren 1 at Long Bridge
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2
Gray Catbird 3
Brown Thrasher 1
Cedar Waxwing 28
Tennessee Warbler 4
Nashville Warbler 1
Magnolia Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped 26
