Jean Alexander, Gail and Steve Clendenen, and I birded the Maryville College Woods trails (Blount County) this morning between 7:15 - 9:15AM. The weather was breezy and damp, with occasional showers. Bird calls and sightings were sporadic but we did encounter a couple of small warbler waves and other activity. Notable sightings were: Yellow-bellied flycatcher - sitting cooperatively in the open for nearly 5 minutes so we could get into the right light to see all the fieldmarks. Warblers Cape May - both seen and heard Canada - both seen and heard Chestnut-sided Blackpoll Magnolia - both seen and heard Am. redstart Black-throated blue - heard Yellow-breasted chat - both seen and heard Wood and Swainson's thrush Great-crested flycatcher Red-eyed and Yellow-throated vireo Rose-breasted grosbeak Pileated, Red-bellied and Downy woodpeckers and the other species commonly found there. The more we bird the Maryville College Woods, the more we discover about this great birding area in Maryville. Yesterday, Jean or I also had Mourning warbler, Northern waterthrush, Bay-breasted, Black-throated green, Canada, Magnolia, Hooded, Am. redstart, Eastern wood peewee and a non-calling Least flycatcher.
