TN-Birders, Sunday 3/16/03 3:30 pm (late post) Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery Anderson County An addition to the recent posts by Dev Joslin & the Loveday's: There was one female BUFFLEHEAD at Eagle Bend on Sunday afternoon. At this time, there were no tree swallows (did have northern rough-winged swallows in Roane County today), Ross's geese, Wilson's snipe, or ring-necked ducks in sight. The Canada geese were almost too thick to count, with X88A still using the area. The 3 hooded mergansers were there, as well as 2 male blue-winged teal (as Dev noted for Monday). Great blue herons were numerous with several around the ponds and many on nests (didn't count as I figured this has already been covered by others). Also had kingfisher, red-winged blackbird, etc, but notable again were two VESPER SPARROWS picking at the semi-dried pond scum in one of the drained ponds. These little guys are obviously on the move now - and for me, March always seems to be the best time to find them. Good birding all, W.
