There have been a few pair of Cackling Geese coming to Shelby Farms, in
Memphis for quite a few years, appearing in the fall and migrating out in the
spring. They become quite habituated each year and can be approached
closely. Here are 7 comparative photos of Canada and Cackling Geese starting
with the
following page. Just click next to file through them:

A while back a group of mixed Cackling and Ross's spent a few days on
Patriot Lake at the Shelby Farm location. Here are 4 more of my photos
comparing
small geese, these dropped into Patriot Lake in Jan, 2006. Start with the
following page, just click next to sort through the mix:

Here are a few photos I took in Lake Co in 2004, of a very small, dark
breasted Cackling, that is most likely of the "minima' race. One of only three
candidates I've seen in the south. Another was seen at Shelby Farms in Memphis
but only very poor photos and then Steve McConnell and I had another bird in
north Alabama.
