July 24, 2009
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

Another noon trip, found Gail King enjoying mom and the Black-bellied
Whistling young feeding and resting back in the weeds. I discovered dad
sleeping
about 50 yards away and Gail saw another Black-bellied slip back into the
heavy growth and another bird fed with the "batching" eclipse plumaged,
male Mallards on TVA Lake.

It was a raptor day and we had Red-tails, Red-shouldered, Broad-winged,
Cooper's, Mississippi Kites, Kestrels and both Vultures forcing momma
Black-bellied to continually look up and keep her brood close. I got some nice
photos of them snuggled up in a ball under her shadow during the noon sun.

Finally after weeks of watching, I located 2 fledged and barely flying
young Spotted Sandpipers with fuzzy head wear for the 3rd nesting at Ensley
and the second in two years............
Good Birding !!!
