May 24, 2013 Paris, Henry County This afternoon as we were sitting together in our goat pen, a soaring bird caught our attention. Even without binoculars, we could see that the bird was a Mississippi Kite... this would be the second sighting of one over our yard in recent days. We saw the first one this year May 13 and had seen our first ever for our yard last year later in the summer. The bird was only in view briefly, but it was very nearby and we had good looks. After getting our binoculars and camera, we returned to the goat pen to continue visiting with the goat and chickens. Within a short time, the bird reappeared, but was more distant. Soon we saw that there were TWO kites, and we got to see them hunting and diving for prey for several minutes. They would disappear for a while and then return. My attempt at photos was underwhelming... wow, are those birds fast! Also, a few days ago (Tuesday) we saw a Mississippi Kite while in the parking lot of our church, which is on Highway 69 South going toward Big Sandy just two miles (by road, less if in direct line) from our home. This could easily have been one of the same birds, considering the proximity. It's nice to have seen these lovely birds again, and to be able to observe their behavior. -Shawna Ellis Paris, Henry County =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
