A milestone was reached in Arkansas near Wapanocca NWR on Thursday morning.
Mike Resch from Massachusetts was in the area on a quest to add to his list of
species in Ark and a birding milestone in Total Ticks. Mike and many others
keep a list for every state in the US and a list of Total Ticks for the US.
Well, a flock of Lapland Longspurs boosted his number to an even 10,000 ticks.
An
impressive total for a working man that works in birds on business trips.
I get a lot of Total Tickers through Memphis, as you can bird MS-AR-TN on
just a short trip and there are excellent areas just across the state line in
every direction to boost your numbers.

Mike recounted to me that his 9,500 tick also came in Arkansas in 2000 when
he said he had his best birding adventure ever; he got a Sora for number 9500
and then Yellow and Black Rails in quick succession watching the rice combines.
As you remember, for about a week that year we tallied an astounding number
of Virginia, Sora, Yellow and Black Rails in an unbelievably small area. The
phenomena has not repeated itself but we still search every year for that magic
combination of habitat, timing of harvest and birds.

Congrats to Mike and Arkansas.......

Good Birding!!!
