Sept. 26, 2009 Mississippi, RV. Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN In the early morning mist and rain, ghostly white images hurried south on the river. Sterna type small terns, no groups just singles and pairs were the first indication that the gates had opened. After the rain ended and the fog lifted, 2 Caspian Terns came by, then DC Cormorants. A group of white egrets seen hugging the top of the water were guessed to be Cattle at a distance but the cadence was wrong and a surprise flock of 21 Snowy Egrets had decided it was time to head south. A tight flock of 20 Green-winged Teal followed and then the best bird of the day floated by in the company of 2 Pied-billed Grebes, an EARED GREBE bobbed by. Dacus Bar had a few Great Egrets and Great Blues but no small birds dared to set down as the female adult Bald Eagle and her small male hatch of the year had been joined by a 2nd year bird. The fog moved back in and I left for the "Pits". At TVA Lake, 2 Caspian Terns fed with a few DC Cormorants and an Osprey hunted McKellar Lake but the "Pits" were the prize as finally there were birds and more birds. Nothing like normal for this time of the year but 2-3,000 birds were spread on the only suitable habitat left and the birds could not resist. During the week there had been less than 500 Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers but now gleaning through this bunch there were: of course Killdeer, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs, a Solitary, 2 Spotted, Semis and 2 Westerns, a ton of Least, 2 immature BAIRD'S than stayed close for photos, 3 Pectoral, 2 Stilt Sandpipers, and 3 Wilson's Snipe. One Semipalmated Sandpiper sported a brass band, one like I've never seen before and it will be interesting to find some info on its origin. Unfortunately a crop duster started making turns right over the area and then a Peregrine made a sweep and most of the birds headed west not south but there were still, FINALLY, 11 species of Wind Birds, enough birds to make ENSLEY BIRDY AGAIN.
