Mississippi River
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co, TN

Quick trips to these areas on both days, showed an increase in migrant
numbers. On Thursday, on the Dacus Bar, I found Killdeer, 7 Least Sandpipers,
1
Greater Yellowlegs (first of season), 2 Lesser Yellowlegs (fos) plus 3
Black-necked Stilts. At the "Pits" in Ensley Bottoms, I had 1 Solitary
Sandpiper
(fos), 4 Least Sandpipers. I also counted 433 Killdeer (380 on the big pit)
and 2
nests with 3 eggs each plus Black-necked Stilts.

On Friday at the bar were Killdeer plus 17 Least Sandpipers, 2 Spotted
Sandpipers (fos) , 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper (fos), 3
Black-necked
Stilts and a single molting Black Tern. At the pits, 2 Solitary Sandpipers,
8 Least Sandpipers plus the cast of regulars.

As I was leaving the "pits", I jumped a deer, she ran about 200 feet and
stopped in the open for a photo op. When she stomped her foot and snorted, I
knew she had young nearby. About 30 feet away in some weeds, I noticed
movement.
My field glasses revealed a fawn, I was able to get some great shots of this
little one. There probably was another nearby but I backed off. The fawn was
no more than a day old, looks great in the photos. I drove a distance away
and mom soon returned and took the youngster off into deeper grass.

Birding pays in many ways..........
