Hi Birders: There is no cure for "hawk-watching" fever. However, repeated trips to the Mendota Fire Tower, especially during September, can bring about a temporary remission. I had my final dose for a while on Monday, September 29. I spent about fours hours in complete solitude, enjoying the beautiful view, the cool wind, and an occasional hawk. I counted 35 Broad-winged Hawks between 10:00 and 2:00. The flying weather was not ideal, and many were flapping their wings much more than usual for the middle of the day. Just maybe the cold front had gotten their attention and they wanted to be in a warmer climate in a hurry. On Sunday, September 28, the first annual "Mendota Hawk Watch Reunion and Cookout" was held at the tower. Attending were Bob Riggs, Larry McDaniel, Ron and Rose Lapp, Don Holt, Bob Quillen, Marion Finucane, Jean Montgomery, Janet Brown, and Chris Morgan. Everyone enjoyed excellent food, great fellowship and good hawks. Great combination!
