July 27, 2008 Shelby Co. TN Clyde Blum came over from Chattanooga for a taste of west TN birds and we were worried about the 100 degree forecast but a storm front came in mid-day and we had the most pleasant temps with a nice breeze that you could have wished for in July. We tried all morning for the Black-bellied Whistling Duck and finally I saw a blob way off in the weeds that turned into the male and just after 10 it flew a few feet over into the area Mom keeps the kids. After many trips back at 4:45 in the afternoon we found Mom and charges drying out after the storms. I've added a couple of better photos of her brooding her young under spread wings and all 9 youngsters piled up sleeping. Try: _http://www.pbase.com/ol_coot/blackbellied_whistling_ducks_ (http://www.pbase.com/ol_coot/blackbellied_whistling_ducks) We had great looks at 12 species of Wind Birds but still only 1 Lesser Yellowlegs. What a great variety of colors and plumage extremes we had before us. TVA Lake produced a singing male Painted Bunting in a location that they show up in late in the season. Also, over McKellar Lake were 24 soaring White Pelicans and high flying Mississippi Kites were in almost every vista. A Blue Grosbeak and Dickcissels came in to full song after the rain, plus we had 8 plus pair of Bobwhite in view at widespread locations with others singing all around. On the River, as the ominous storm clouds roared through, we could only find a single Forster's and a pair of Least Terns. We tried all the nesting areas for fledged Western Kingbirds and finally in north Memphis we were rewarded with four fledged young and a ragged adult. An unusually COOL day of birding in JULY! Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
