I visited the refuge at about 11:15 today. I arrived just as Charles Murray
was leaving. There was limited bird activity today. There were less than 30
Sandhill cranes present when I arrived. A large group did fly in later and
brought the overall number up to about 200.
A large raft of over 100 ducks was present in the slough, primarily
ringed-necked, mallards and gadwalls. Also present were about 25 northern
shovelers, 2 male northern pintails and 4 American wigeons. Notably absent were
coots and pied-billed grebes. Charles reported one American kestrel in
addition.
