Subject: [MISSBIRD] Fw: Purple Martin Nests

st1\:* { BEHAVIOR: url(#default#ieooui) } MISSBIRDERS: Francis Henne of
Goodman, MS contacted me to report this odd nesting behavior and I thought
itwas worthy of posting to Missbird in hopes that someone else might have
noted this type of nesting by Purple Martins. Gene Knight This is what
Francis related to me:

On May 29, 2007, I was at the Home Place Restaurant at the truck stop on the
east side of I55 at Exit 144 near Pickens, MS. I saw a large number of
Purple Martins flying in and our of the car gas port area covering. The
ceiling of this area was a light corrugated material. The Martins were
goinginto the inverted V shaped areas above the lights where the ceiling met
the side beams.

On June 20th, I again visited the same truck stop and say the Purple Matins
entering and exiting these areas and definitely appeared to be feeding
young. Have Purple Martins found a new communal nesting place? Has any one
else noted this?

I have observed Purple Martins nesting in the light poles that surround the
KFC in downtown Memphis. This was some years back but I haven't noticed
themthere lately.
