June 2011 Shelby Co. TN On President's Island; 2 active Scissor-tail nests, 5 active Western Kingbird nests. Pyramid nest downtown and northwest Memphis - 7 active Western K. nests -1 hybrid female on nest. Northeast Memphis - 2 active Western K. nests Southeast Memphis, includes Ensley Bottoms and Mud Lake: 5 active Western Kingbird nests, 7 active Green Heron nests, 1 active Anhinga nest, 4 Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nests, PLUS high number of nesting Black-necked Stilts due to vegetated habitat, water and flood crowding. High number of adults counted one day- 161, highest number of active nests one day- 68 many still active as of 6/24, highest number of young counted one day (difficult to count to say the least but exceptional numbers of broods of 4 brought off) from first flight this week to just hatching - 86. I'm sure the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are nesting with 28 - 34 still being seen but most are first year birds just hanging out. 8 active and successful Loggerhead Shrike nests inside city limits. One in the parking lot of a major shopping center;o) Exceptionally high numbers of fledged Cow Birds and Starlings are now already being seen in huge flocks. The Good, the Bad and now the Ugly.......... Unfortunately, the Least Terns are forced to nest on open mainland due to the flooding (the river at Memphis still over 20 feet after an almost 28 foot fall but on a 4 foot rise this week) and 99% of these nests will be unsuccessful due to predation etc, etc.............. Good Birding!! Jeff R. Wilson / TLBA 6300 Memphis-Arlington Road Bartlett, TN 38135 http://www.pbase.com/ol_coot/ What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
