Following an unsuccessful search of Brown-headed Nuthatch at Douglas Lake I
stopped at one cove adjacent to Saddle Dam 6 (35°56'10.9"N 83°31'28.8"W) to
search for ducks, usually a good place if any ducks at all are in the area.
Saddle dams are smaller earthen dams constructed to fill in gaps along the
nearby ridgeline to permit a higher water elevation than would otherwise be
possible. I found 4 Long-tailed Ducks, 9 Bufflehead and 5 Hooded Mergansers.
I moved over to the Mountain Cove Marina at Douglas and found another single
Long-tailed Duck 1.25 miles from the Saddle Dam group. Also seen from this
location with scope was 19 White-winged Scoters, 4 of them fairly close to the
marina for good views and decent photos.
